Maseno-UNM Facilities at Siaya County Referral Hospital (SCRH)
Siaya County Referral Hospital (SCRH) is a major healthcare facility in western Kenya serving nearly one million people. Originally designed as a 360-bed hospital, it provides essential medical services for children and adults and added a 160-bed isolation facility in 2020 in response to COVID-19. It remains a key regional center for clinical care, training, and research collaborations.
Within SCRH, the Maseno–UNM Laboratories sit next to the pediatric ward and support ongoing clinical and translational research. The labs include dedicated spaces for microbiology, tissue culture, and clinical diagnostics, equipped for molecular, hematological, and biochemical analyses under strict biosafety standards. A specialized BSL-2+ suite further supports safe infectious disease studies.
Pediatric and Maternal Health Solutions – USA (PMHS-USA) directly supports research at these Maseno–UNM facilities. Secure intranet systems connect the laboratory, pediatric ward, and project offices, enabling efficient data management and collaboration among research staff from Maseno University, the University of New Mexico, and PMHS-USA.
